Curator talk: Kevin de Choisy’s ceramic glaze experiments

Throughout history, makers of ceramics have used glazes to add colour and texture to their pots.

From the bold lead glazes used by English potters in the 1700s to contemporary studio pottery, makers have continued to explore the possibilities of colour to transform their wares.

Using the glaze experiments of British potter Kevin de Choisy (1954-2020) as a starting point, this talk will consider how artists test and refine glaze recipes to achieve different colours and visual effects. De Choisy drew inspiration from both historic English polychrome wares and East Asian ceramics, showing how colour can connect contemporary practice with ceramic traditions from the past.
