The Lost Paintings: A Prelude to Return اللوحات المفقودة: تمهيد للعودة – معرض فني

In November 1947, Palestinian‑Lebanese artist Maroun Tomb was preparing to open a new exhibition in Haifa. The opening was scheduled for 29 November 1947 – the same day that the United Nations approved the partition of Palestine. The exhibition was lost amid the following war and events that later become known as the Nakba. 

في نوفمبر 1947، كان الفنان الفلسطيني-اللبناني مارون تومب (Maroun Tomb) يستعد لافتتاح معرض جديد في حيفا. كان من المقرر افتتاحه في 29 نوفمبر 1947 — وهو اليوم نفسه الذي أقرت فيه الأمم المتحدة تقسيم فلسطين. ضاع المعرض وسط الحرب والأحداث التي تلت ذلك، والتي أصبحت تُعرف لاحقًا باسم النكبة. 

Almost nothing remains of Maroun Tomb’s original exhibition, apart from a handwritten letter he sent to his friend Jacques Motola, including the invitation to the opening of the exhibition and a list of the titles of the paintings that were to be shown. 

 لا يكاد يتبقى شيء من معرض مارون تومب الأصلي، باستثناء رسالة مكتوبة بخط اليد أرسلها إلى صديقه جاك موتولا، تضمنت دعوة لحضور افتتاح المعرض وقائمة بعناوين اللوحات التي كان من المقرر عرضها. 

From this fragile trace, a powerful contemporary exhibition has been created. Descendants of Maroun Tomb and Jacques Motola, artists Joëlle Tomb and Haidi Motola, as well as curator, historian and critic Rula Khoury, have curated this exhibition of 53 artists from across Palestine and the diaspora.  

قامت حفيدتا مارون تومب وجاك موتولا، الفنانتان جويل تومب وهايدي موتولا، بالإضافة إلى القيّمة والمؤرخة والناقدة رولا خوري، بتنظيم هذا المعرض الذي يضم أعمال 53 فنانًا من فلسطين ومن الشتات. 

Each artist was invited to respond to one of the titles of the lost paintings from Tomb’s original exhibition. Together these pieces are the exhibition ‘The Lost Paintings: A Prelude to Return’ exhibition.

Following highly acclaimed presentations in Canada and the US, The Lost Paintings: A Prelude to Return will be one of the most significant group exhibitions of Palestinian artists ever seen in England.
