In ancient Egypt only wealthy people slept on beds. These were made from wood and sloped gently from head to foot.  At the top end was a wooden headrest and at the bottom end was a foot-board.  The curved headrest was designed to keep people cool by letting air move around the neck and head. Most Egyptians slept on mats on the floor.
