Hearing Hogarth

William Hogarth: Painter & Printmaker GalleryIf you’ve had the pleasure of seeing our William Hogarth: Painter & Printmaker exhibition, you’ll know that the paintings and prints hung on our gallery walls are only half the experience.

The audio tracks that guide you through this exhibition bring the works to life. These paintings and prints tell stories of a time gone by and thanks to Hogarth’s depictions of late 18th century London, these stories have not been forgotten.

London in 2015 is full of culture and diversity. It’s a place where classic arts and contemporary underground scenes lay side by side. 240 years ago however, London was a very different place. This exhibition shows you London as William Hogarth would have seen it.

Hogarth was interested in society and what he saw from it troubled him. The debauchery taking place at the time was not overseen and became the subject of many of his works. The works shown in William Hogarth: Painter & Printmaker highlight his concern and ridicule for society at the time.

We’ve chosen seven works in this exhibition and asked three different people to record a comment on each one.

Below is the first of these seven clips. Here Steve Poole comments on William Hogarth’s 1745 painting, ‘The Painter and his Pug’.

William Hogarth: Painter & Printmaker is open every day at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery until 31 August 2015.
