Petrykivka Painting Masterclass

Guided by a talented Ukrainian artist, learn how to paint floral motifs using special brushes and discover why this joyful art form has become a national symbol of resilience and beauty.

Petrykivka painting originated from mural decorations applied to village houses in many parts of Ukraine, with different regions having their own characteristic styles. Petrykivka painting is distinguished by florals, vines, fruits, birds, people and farm animals.

It is rich in symbolism; roosters stands for fire and spiritual awakening, while birds represent light, harmony and happiness. In folk belief, the paintings protect people from hardship and evil. This belief led to many household items made of wood and other materials were also decorated, particularly wedding chests.

This style of painting originates from the village of Petrykivka in the Dnipropetrovsk province of Ukraine. Petrykivka painting is on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This event is part of a series of creative Saturday workshops celebrating Ukrainian traditions, identity, and resilience inspired by the powerful exhibition ‘Erased from the Face of the Earth’ currently on display at M Shed.
