Motanka Doll Making Workshop

Create your own Motanka doll, a sacred symbol of memory and hope for Ukrainians.

The Motanka is more than a doll – it’s a guardian of tradition, and a thread connecting generations.

Once hidden during Soviet times, these protective talismans are now making a powerful return in Ukraine and wherever Ukrainians are across the globe.

The name “motanka” comes from the word “motaty” (to wind). Motanka are knotted dolls made out of wound fabric, and without using a needle and scissors. Generally dolls are made in the shape of a human figure. Each doll is unique and made with the good intentions and sincerity of the maker.

Motanka differ from ordinary dolls by having ’empty’ faces. Instead Motanka dolls have multicoloured threads laid out in a cross shape across the face.

In this workshop you’ll learn to craft your own Motanka doll using natural materials, channelling intention, history, and healing into every knot and wrap.

This series of creative Saturday workshops celebrate Ukrainian traditions, identity, and resilience, with each one inspired by the powerful exhibition “Erased from the Face of the Earth” currently on display at M Shed.
