Black History Month 2024 at M Shed

Bristol Museums is putting on a free, all-day, building-wide festival to celebrate Black History Month.

In the Harbourview Suite on the top floor, Penny Marie will be hosting dance workshops on the theme ‘Joy is an Act of Resistance’. Penny is a long-standing dancer, choreographer and community facilitator and activist, and the founder of the Freedom Soul Dance company who recently facilitated a slate of performances at this year’s Bristol Harbour Festival. Penny will be running an all-ages family workshop from 11:30 to 12:30, and a 16+ workshop from 14:00 to 15:30.

In the Studios on the first floor, there will be traditional storytelling by South African cultural activist //Kabbo Hue Ferdinand, courtesy of our Learning team. Stories will be performed at 10:30, 11:30, 13:00, and 14:30.

And finally, end the day with a bang in the Waterside Suite on the top floor as Rankin Snoopy brings his legendary Jah Lokko sound system to M Shed from 16:00 to 18:00. Snack on free Jamaican patties from Sunshine Graze, let the kids get stuck into a ‘make your own sound system’ activity, and feel the force of a top-notch system in full effect as the Jah Lokko crew take to the decks.
