Jessica Ashman and Adassa Dixon discuss Those That Do Not Smile Will Kill Me: Decolonising Jamaican Flora

Join us for a thought-provoking discussion between artist Jessica Ashman and historian Adassa McDonald Dixon, exploring the intersection of history and art in storytelling.

As part of Ashman’s exhibition, Those that don’t smile will kill me: Decolonising Jamaican Flora, this conversation will delve into the hidden histories of Jamaica’s botanical past, the role of archives in uncovering untapped narratives, and the power of creative work in reclaiming cultural heritage.

Together, Ashman and McDonald Dixon – both black women working to amplify Black histories and experiences – will reflect on the process of researching and reinterpreting colonial collections, the challenges and opportunities of engaging with museum archives, and the ways in which art can empower communities and reconnect with their histories. The discussion will also touch on Ashman’s journey through this project, the exhibition’s reception, and the future of decolonial work within museums and the arts.

This event promises an insightful and inspiring exchange on history, resistance, and the radical act of reclaiming knowledge.
