Bumblebee Identification Workshop

Join us for our enjoyable and informative Bumblebee Identification Workshop, as part of the Wessex Citizen Science Showcase.

In this hands on, practical workshop, you will learn how to tell:

• Bees from wasps
• Solitary bees from the social bees
• Bumblebee mimics from true bumblebees
• The sex and caste of bumblebees
• Identify the common bumblebees.
• How to differentiate the common species from the very similar but rarer species

Use microscopes to discover the secret lives and behaviours of bumblebees with expert guidance from curator Rhian Rowson. If the weather is good, we may visit Brandon hill to spot any Queens that might zoom past. If the weather is poor, we will visit behind the scenes of the museum insect collection.
