Behind the Scenes at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery: Caring for our Collections

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at the museum, to make sure that the collections on display and in the stores are safe, conserved, documented and accessible?

This autumn, essential improvements to our Fine Art Store have given us the opportunity to show you! While the works are happening, some artworks usually kept in that store need to be moved to protect them. Between Tuesday 24 September and Thursday 10 October our ground floor exhibition space will become a temporary store, and we will be holding a number of events to highlight these stored collections.

Talks, Q&A sessions and Conservation-in-Action tours will focus on how we interpret, care for and provide access to the objects in the museum’s collections.

Conservation in Action drop-in sessions, from 10.30am – 12.30pm, are an opportunity to look behind the scenes at what our Conservators do and to ask questions:

  • Tuesday 24 September
  • Wednesday 25 September
  • Thursday 26 September
  • Tuesday 1 October
  • Wednesday 2 October
  • Thursday 3 October
  • Tuesday 8 October
  • Wednesday 9 October
  • Thursday 10 October

Afternoon talks, from 2pm – 3.30pm, are subject specific and based around the works being stored:

  • Conserving our Collections – Tuesday 24 September, Wednesday 2 October, Thursday 10 October
  • Caring for our Collections – Wednesday 25 September, Thursday 3 October, Tuesday 8 October
