Winter Lecture: Mantegna and Bellini – family and rivalry in the Renaissance

Descent into Limbo by Bellini in Bristol Museum & Art Gallery sits at the heart of the relationship between Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini.

They were two superbly inventive artists who also happened to be brothers-in-law.

Recently lent to the National Gallery’s exhibition on the painters, the picture acts as the starting point for Gabriele Finaldi’s lecture on the subject of creative rivalry and family relationships in Renaissance Italy.

Speaker: Gabriele Finaldi, Director at National Gallery
