Illustrated lecture: Nature and seasons in Japanese art and gardens
Japan’s four distinct seasons have been a source of inspiration to artists and poets for hundreds of years.
Celebrating change and the seasons are vital elements in the design and seasonal activities within Japanese gardens.
Itinerary
- 12pm – 12.30pm: Japanese Garden Society members meet in café for lunch (optional – not included)
- 1pm – 1.15pm: Event registration in the schools room
- 1.15pm – 2.15pm: Celebrating the seasons in a Japanese Garden with Yoko Kawaguchi
- 3.45pm – 4pm: Tea and coffee break
- 3.15pm – 3.45pm: Nature and gardens in Bristol’s Japanese woodblock prints with Kate Newnham
- 3.45pm – 4.45pm: Self-directed tour of the gallery
The day has been developed by Japanese Garden Society in collaboration with Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and will be led by Yoko Kawaguchi and Kate Newnham.
Yoko is a cultural historian specialising in Japanese gardens and the relationship between Japan and the West. Kate is senior curator of Visual Arts at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery with a life-long interest in Japanese culture.
