Late lunch talk: The archaeology of Blaise

The Blaise Estate has some of Bristol’s most amazing archaeology.

Blaise Castle Hill has the remains of an Iron Age hillfort, a Roman building (possibly a temple) and a medieval building (possibly a chapel). Kings Weston Hill has evidence for four Bronze Age Barrows, a Bronze Age metal workers hoard, an Iron Age hillfort, a possible Roman road and a ‘post-Roman’ cemetery. Prehistoric stone tools have also been found across the parkland.

Despite this, no major fieldwork has ever taken place and most of our information comes from chance finds, small excavations or rescue digs. This means that there are still many unanswered questions about the estate’s past with more waiting to be discovered.

This talk late lunch lecture will look at the evidence that we do have and what it can tell us before touching on ways that we may be able to find out more.

Speaker: Kate Iles, Curator of Archaeology for Bristol Culture. She helps curate a large, multi-period archaeology collection and works across several museum sites. Kate is also a Young Archaeologists’ Club leader for the Bristol & Bath branch and the Project Officer for Bristol & Avon Archaeological Society.
