The Big Pliosaurus Draw… and more

Join us for this big day of fun to celebrate The Big Draw and our amazing family friendly exhibition Pliosaurus!

The Big Draw is the world’s biggest drawing festival from The Campaign for Drawing.

  • Find out the secrets of how Doris the pliosaur was created with Tony Hitchcock, the model-maker who brought our pliosaur fossil back to life
  • Help make a giant model of a Jurassic creature with the help of Children’s Scrapstore
  • Have a go at our new Explore and Draw trail for budding artists
  • Make and take home origami pliosaur bookmarks or dinosaur egg juggling balls

Programme

Scrapstoreosaurus! – Front Hall
All day
Make a giant Jurassic beast with the help of Children’s Scrapstore or maybe you can recreate the ecosystem in which pliosaurs would have lived? See how wide you can make the jaws. Can you fit your head inside? Tweet us your photos using the hashtag #DeadlyDoris

Jurassic crafts – Rear Hall
All day
Have a go at making your own Jurassic crafts to take home. Choose from either a dinosaur egg juggling ball or a Pliosaurus origami bookmark.

Explore and draw – Geology gallery, upper first floor
10am – 11.30am
Meet with artists in our Geology gallery and be inspired to sketch our amazing specimens. Have a look at the artists’ sketchbooks, pick up some top tips and then collect your own pencils and paper to have a go at sketching yourself. You will also be able to collect a free copy of our new Explore and Draw trail for loads of ideas for fun drawing challenges as you wander round the museum.

Doris’ secret den
10.30am – 11am and 11.30am – 12pm
Join curators for a special tour of the hidden museum vaults! Travel down a secret staircase, meet Doris’ weird and wonderful fossil friends, and take the ammonite challenge to learn more about her life at the museum. Sign up in Front Hall and meet by the bench before the stairs. No step-free access. Most suitable for over 7 year olds. Maximum of 10 people per tour.

How to build a Pliosaurus – learning and workshop space, lower first floor
11am – 11.45am and 1.30pm – 2.15pm
Join Tony Hitchcock, the model maker who transformed the Pliosaurus carpenteri fossil into the amazing beast that is Doris. Discover his tools of his trade, see Doris as she emerged in the workshop and on the kitchen table! There will be plenty of opportunities to ask Tony questions about all aspects of the model making process. Sign up in front hall. Most suitable for over 6 year olds. Maximum of 40 people.
