Join us for an exclusive ‘school only’ Stone Age to Iron Age experience in the museum.
Investigate the development of prehistoric human technology, handle artefacts, visit our Stone Age to Iron Age exhibition and try some prehistoric crafts.
Pupils will
- Have exclusive access to the museum outside of public opening hours
- Handle artefacts including stone hand axes and flint tools 400,000 years old
- Investigate how tools were made and how they were used
- Consider evidence of how people lived in the past
- Discover evidence of where prehistoric people lived in this area
- Visit our Stone Age to Iron Age exhibition to complete a prehistoric challenge
- Try prehistoric crafts to take home
Suitable for: Year 3 –6
Duration: 3 hours including a 30 minutes lunch break
Group size: Up to 2 classes per day
Session availability: We have two sessions available at 10.30am – 1.30pm
Picnic: Planning on having a picnic as part of your visit? Free use of our lunch room is included in the cost of your session
Visit: The museum is closed to all other visitors during this experience. You will have exclusive access to our workshop room, our Stone Age to Iron Age exhibition, toilets and lunch room.

Pupils will work in 5 groups, including working in the museum gallery. Each group will require support from at least one adult. Required ratio is one adult for every six pupils.
To get the most from your visit, please allocate pupils into 5 groups before your workshop begins.
We encourage taking lots of photos but please don’t use a flash or tripod.
Please note, the museum is closed to all other visitors during this experience. You will have exclusive access to our workshop room, our Stone Age to Iron Age exhibition, toilets and lunch room. The rest of the museum is unavailable during this experience.
