Our exhibition space is in the middle of a young people’s takeover! 25 Below is taking place throughout August, offering a mind-boggling variety of free creative workshops and events for 14-25 year olds – as well as a space to exhibit the wonderful work they produce.
The first week was an explosion of creativity. Rife Magazine ran a fantastic two-day GIFs, memes, and animations workshop, the results of which you can see in our Moving Image gallery. The young artist Anum Rizvi also came in and worked with young people to build a massive 3D sculpture. The exhibition space started out as a blank slate, but in just a week the young people at these workshops have transformed it into something completely different.
Of course, there’s plenty more to come. The second week of the programme is in full swing, starting with Monday’s paper engineering and origami workshop. Throughout the day, the friendly folks at Young Bristol invited young people to drop in and design huge paper tapestries and sculpture. They even left some art supplies and instructions, so that anyone can add to their work. Drop in anytime and help us fill the gallery.
Young Bristol came back for more on Tuesday 16 August with a ’zine making workshop. As they explored the museum through collage, typography and illustration, participants learned new skills and developed new ways to make their ideas “pop” and contributed to some vibrant Bristol Museum ’zines, which you can see in the exhibition space anytime.
Unleash your inner poet on Wednesday 17 August with Solomon OB, the UK Slam Champion. Develop your own spoken word performance piece and spit some bars with a master of the art. There’s even an opportunity to perform at our Wrap Party on 31 August. Pre-book now.
After you’ve expressed yourself out loud, why not put it in writing too? Award winning author Rachel Carter is here on Thursday 18 August to help budding writers find inspiration in the objects and environments around them, using the museum as a starting point. Come along and put pen to paper. Book your place now.
Perhaps all that creativity has got you thinking about the future. What sort of career will you have? What skills do you have, and which ones would you like to develop? How do you get a job in museums or the creative sector? Babbasa and Bristol Culture are here to offer you practical careers advice and guidance on Friday 19 August between 12pm and 3pm. No need to book – drop in and launch your creative career!
There’s plenty more to come in week three, from Minecraft to street dance – and it’s all free. If you’re interested in joining us for these exciting events, head over to our 25 Below page for a full programme and booking information.
